frustrated

So you have a web site.  Maybe you set one up on a do it yourself program or maybe you paid top dollar for a custom designed and developed web site.

Or maybe you were an early adopter and saw the potential in the internet to grow your business.  Your site went gangbusters in the beginning and has now dwindled to nothing.

However, after the initial excitement and promise, you're just not getting any traffic to your site and you know that you're missing out on sales.

You're not alone.

I talk with a lot of business owners and as they know I do web development as well as publish a network of sites of my own, the question I am continually asked is . . .

"How can I get more traffic to my website?"

I'll tell you what I tell them (and I won't even charge you.)  There are three main components to ranking in the search engines.

1. How your site is structured. The actual code of your site, the make up of the HTML page, can affect how your site ranks in the search engines.  Was your site developed by the kid of a friend of yours or someone that does it as a hobby?  You may have got an awesome deal and "saved" money, but how much is that website costing you in lost sales?

2. The content on the site. How you say what you say, as well as how it is formatted on the page, has a huge impact on how well you rank on certain keywords.

3. Your site's online "reputation:" The third factor is how your site is viewed in the big World Wide Web as a whole.  Who is linking to you, how they link to you, and the frequency all play a big role.

Those three factors are a very simplified overview of search engine optimization (the industry term for getting your sites to rank well organically.)  With each factor, there are a number of strategies that come into play, and a website audit will cover each.  Sometimes all it takes for a web site to rank well on keywords is to have a properly constructed site (#1) and content (#2.)   Sometimes you have to add social media integration to your site to jump ahead of the field.  In some industries, in order to rank well it takes consistent dedication and expert promotion to even have a chance of ranking on page 1. A website audit helps to pinpoint the exact areas that need work.

Are you asking yourself, "What difference does it make how my website ranks?"

Here is the brutal truth.

If your web site doesn't rank on page one for a particular keyword, it may as well not even be online.  Using Google as an example as it still generates the bulk of search traffic, the top ten search results for a particular keyword phrase will receive 89 percent of the click throughs versus 10 percent for page two.

Of the page one results, the click throughs break down like this:

serp click throughs

The number one ranked site for a keyword phrase in Google will receive 42 percent of the clicks versus 11 percent for position #2.  Pretty amazing isn't it?

So the key to increase traffic to your website is to improve how your site ranks on your relevant keyword phrases.  One way to identify the most effective keywords is through a website audit.

So what is that #1 spot worth to you?  Let's look at the remodeling industry as an example.  "houston remodeling" gets on average 10,000 searches per month.

Now it would be hard to estimate the cost of the average remodeling job as it can range from a simple little $500 fixup to a $100,000 plus overhaul.  But let's just say overall the average is just $1,000 per job, and let's say the contractor's web site does a good job of capturing the visitor's information and converts at 20 percent.

With only a 20% conversion rate, the value of a #1 position is $840,000 per month versus $238,000 for the #2 spot and $59,800 for the #10 spot on page one.

The question is what is each job or sale worth to your business and how big of a piece of the pie are you missing?  Look at some of your keywords in the Google Keyword Search tool to get an idea.

So what about your web site?  What are you going to have to do to get traffic?

I'm so glad that you asked.

A website audit report that will tell you exactly what is holding your site back in the search engines and give you a step by step blueprint to fix it.

If you have had your domain name for any time at all, I'm sure you've been bombarded with letters, emails, and even telephone calls from people who want to sell you "seo services," "link building packages," "search engine submissions," and "pay per click campaigns."

I know this because I get them myself. (You would think that when they saw that a marketing company was the registrant they would skip to the next name on the list.)  As a matter of fact, I just got one today offering backlinks (from one network) and press release submission for a monthly rate of $495.

Now, I'm not going to comment on the value of these services.  I'm sure some are good and others are garbage.

But the point is you can't know what you need until you know where the problems are through a website audit.

Say you went with the offer I mentioned above and were paying $495 a month for renting backlinks.  If your site structure is a mess and your content isn't optimized, that is a complete waste of money.  You would just be putting a silk dress on a pig.

Before you spend any money or time on traffic generating strategies, you need to determine the area where your site needs improvement.  That is where the Website SEO Audit and Traffic Blueprint comes in.
